Travis's noir is entirely watchable, but it's only because of to Ahmed's captivating presence.
Too often City of Tiny Lights is let down by an overeagerness to play up its source material, and hampered by unnecessarily showy direction and inadvisable attempts at gumshoe dialogue.
'The Big Sleep' with bruvs. Which isn't an entirely off-putting proposition.
Though pleasant enough to watch, there's something not fully realized about the final product here.
Engrossing, even if it doesn't quite measure up to its promise.
The contemporary London twist gives the genre a shot of adrenaline and a watchable character in Tommy who would merit being seen in more adventures.
A far darker side of London is painted in bleakly realistic tones in City of Tiny Lights but, like its protagonist, Travis' film shoots from the hip, has a glint in its eye and packs a mean punch.
City Of Tiny Lights is like a Raymond Chandler story that's been parachuted into modern-day west London.
There's hardboiled and then there's just a waste of perfectly good eggs; City of Tiny Lights is regrettably the latter.
There's something about City Of Tiny Lights, however, that leads you to feel as if it's just a Sunday night and you're watching a BBC miniseries with a cup of tea in front of you.
Ultimately, the film's ambitions of inclusivity, both in its story and its casting, are more admirable than the execution.
Ahmed (and Billie Piper, as his love interest) are decent, but despite its efforts, this film is only noir in that it mostly happens at night.
